We hope you enjoyed the first RhettandLinKast since our hiatus as much as we did. If you missed it, you can enjoy it in all it’s non-live glory right now (in two parts, thanks to a short disconnect):
Congratulations to our 80′s CBE winners! Here they are:
Photo: Lissa’s “A-Team in Clay”
Audio: Tie between Gaby’s cover of “Don’t Stop Believing” via RaquelTWG and Paul Dufilho’s original song “Bring Em Back”
Video: Tie between the Dufilho’s “Bring Back the 80′s” and Joe Woody’s “Ultimate Simon”.
Thanks everybody who participated in the 80′s CBE! You’ll all be getting your secret song soon, and the first 45 participants will be receiving their 80′s t-shirts in the coming weeks.
And now, one last item of business….what are we going to call ourselves? After looking through the Kommunity’s discussion about this, we both liked RandLers and Mythical Beasts. So, now comes the time for the Kommunity to decide. Vote for your preference below, and we’ll go with your decision. Voting continues up until next week’s show.
UPDATE: I (Rhett) had some thoughts about Mythical Beasts I’d like to share.

Leadership
So the part where Rhett tells Link not to say that thing about the sharks again (at about 15mins into the kast) started an entire 20 minute conversation in the chat between Marsha, Johnathan, and myself on the Komm!!!
I was watching an old kast and told Marsha to look at it, then she sent me a link to this one and told me about the whispering. Which made me laugh. We were talking about it to John, but didn’t say the whole phrase because we we’re both afraid it was something very bad. I was really curious about it, but was too afraid to search for it on google. So John said he would be the brave one and look it up.
Then told us we failed because “Jumping the Shark” means: “an idiom used to describe the moment in the evolution of a television show when it begins a decline in quality that is beyond recovery. It is synonymous with the phrase, “the beginning of the end.”
So for those of you who were wondering.. it isn’t actually anything bad.. You’re okay to say that Link, evidently Rhett does not know what he is talking about…
[...] Then you all voted. [...]
Being your mythical best. « Rhett&Link: Internetainment
Re-watching this kast I was struck by a question: did anyone think Link on the left and Rhett on the right sounded better… This new seating orientation has still thrown off my sense of direction.
Oh NO!!! I voted for RandLers but now I am regretting it. Mythical Beasts sounds awesome. I’m glad everyone else is voting for that!
The whole idea behind the name is to create the feeling of Kommunity. Say you are on vacation somewhere wearing a T-shirt that says “Mythical Beast”, and you run into some total stranger wearing the exact same thing.
Instant Kommunity right there, and a new friend!
I think you should combine the two names, so it could be mythical randlers or randler beasts.
For those too young to get the reference, “jumping the shark” refers to a “Happy Days” episode where surfing Fonzie jumped over a shark. The episode signaled the impending doom of “Happy Days” because it stretched the credibility of the show. Anything that has lasted too long is referred to as having jumped the shark.
I voted for Rhandlers, just because Mythical Beasts seems to general. As someone else pointed out, if someone on the street saw you wearing a “I am a Mythical Beast” tee shirt, they would just see it as a funny shirt. But Rhandlers do not exist outside of this komunicty, and therefore wont be confused with any other Rhandlers.
I’m probably off-base here, but assuming there will be one main mythical-beast as mascot, satisfy everyone by naming the m-beast ‘RandLer.’ ‘RandLy’ for short (…so it’s only one letter shorter). Make designing RandLy a CBE. Afterwards, people can design their own mythical beast identity for themselves if they’d like. Just some thoughts…
Wow, I am so sad that I was at parent night during the first RhettLinKast and couldn’t see it live but I am very excited to see that my first graders unicorns were behind you guys!!! That is beyond cool! I can’t wait for Thursday to roll around these Kasts what I truly look forward to each week! Okay back to watching it
I have already weighed in on the Kommunity in various places how I feel about the two choices, but…
What about the link for purchasing the Looking for Ms. Locklear DVD? I am anxiously waiting!
Well, as for not asking, “What have you been doing during your hiatus?” I feel like we’ve kinda kept up with you all over the summer through being members of the Kommunity.
Also… Rhett, you are a super-tall guy with longer arms. The space you are in now seems a little smaller than the old Kast space, but that might be because of the new backdrop. Do you feel cramped at all? I just wondered… it is especially prominent in the part of the Kast where you were flailing your arms around to impersonate Link’s epic story telling/children’s entertainment skills.
And, I’m so happy to finally see the return of the Kast! I don’t know if any other YouTubers do anything like the LiveKast, but it’s great that you take time out to talk to your fans on Thursday nights.
good question, Michael Joseph!
and I think the answer has to be yes. perhaps YOU (or someone) can start a new discussion on the Komm about it. “what should be our next CBE?” maybe it should be a smaller-scale one that the 80s one (which took all summer). i think this would should be simpler so that it can be completed by the end of the month. thoughts? maybe it should be related to our new name for members. or not. thoughts? discuss on the Komm….
I gotta say (uh, going back to the MAIN point of the post), I love most of the winners, although the Don’t Stop Believin’ cover isn’t my favorite. Mine didn’t stand a chance against those!
When’s the next CBE, if there is one?
Personally, my vote went to Mythical Beast without hesitation. I think that’s more of an “insider” type of thing (like all the true fans know that you met while coloring pictures of mythical beasts). So that automatically made it my favorite. Being part of an “insider” thing is always cool, haha. I’m not saying I don’t like RandLer, though. It’s just that when people ask you “What’s a RandLer?”, all you have to say is “A Rhett and Link-er”, and they’ll probably understand that you’re a fan of Rhett and Link. However, if someone asks you about being a Mythical Beast, you would probably have to go into a deeper explanation of what it means. And by knowing that information, you could turn someone who has no idea who Rhett and Link are into a fan. I also like how we could all be our own type of Mythical Beast, and also be a part of the bigger group of Mythical Beasts, just as Rhett mentioned. Another thing is that I think that if I say “I’m a RandLer”, someone could mistake it as “I’m Randall”. It does kinda sound a lot like Randall…Plus, I’m just the type of person who would love to tell people I’m a Mythical Beast or wear a t-shirt that says “I’m a Mythical Beast”.
In my mind, “Join the RandLer’s” on a shirt would start a conversation. A strong, interesting, informational conversation discussing the word and what it means. In the end, making a new R&L fan and wiping away a good 3-7+ minutes at a boring party.
If you were wearing a shirt that said “Join the Mythical Beasts” on it, someone might come up to you and say, “The Mythical Beasts? Get that shirt at the World of Warcraft convention last weekend or something?”.
… Or they might not even ask about it. When most people see “mythical beast”, they think they already know what it means: a non-existant fairytale creature from a magical place, video game, or story.. not a Rhett&Link fan. Because “mythical beast” just isn’t very original.
It would also take a lot longer to explain “mythical beast” because it has a story behind it. With RandLer, you simply tell someone that it stands for Rhett and Link-er (and explain further if you want to/have the time).
I’ll be perfectly fine with Mythical Beasts if it wins. Rhett makes good points about that name. I’m just listing off why I think RandLer is better. (:
Mythical Beasts is such an awesome name!!! I love that it’s an inside joke kind of thing. Plus it’s kinda silly, just like Rhett & Link. =P
I haven’t been this excited about voting since… never. Somewhat sad to say, but this is more interesting than the last presidential election. Plus, Rhett really showed how high the stakes are.
Personally, Mythical Beasts sounds more fun and interactive. If I wasn’t part of the Kommunity already, I would join just to see what this whole Mythical Beast buzz is all about.
I like Mythical Beasts. We could all go back and update our Kommunity profiles to list what type of mythical creature we are – like I could be the “Super Cool Homeschooling Mom” (everyone knows that has to be mythical, right?). We could voice our individuality and show our support of Rhett and Link at the same time. Love it.
First off: FAIL! You are on the wrong side, but I guess a couple months away from us does that to ya!
:)
and again, sorry we couldn’t be there,
and I don’t think we should go for either of those names(even though they are pretty good)
It should be something like: well, I don’t know, but I’ll think of it
We missed you like crazy, you and all your crazy fans too!
God bless,
-Aly and Cate
(Yes we sit opposite our names…)
Thanks for the further explanation, Rhett. Yes, that makes a lot of sense, and I apologize for being grouchy.
I certainly HOPE “giant falcons” are only mythical.
No small animal would be safe, and one poop could mess up a whole car…
Hey Beth,
Points taken…but here are my thoughts: Yes, a falcon is real, but “Giant Falcon” (as in a 10 foot tall falcon) is mythical.
I should have explained this more last night, but one additional reason that we don’t prefer “The Internetainees” is that it seems a bit limited. yes, we are Internetainers, but we like to think that this whole thing that we’re building is a bit beyond the internet. We make films, music, do live stuff, the occasional TV job, AND make web videos. And, while all these things are definitely brought together and enhanced by the web, we still think that Internetainees is too wrapped up in the web, as opposed to being something that transcends the Internet, like Mythical Beast or RandLers.
Make sense?
Aren’t falcons real, though, as opposed to mythical? Or are there myths about falcons even though they are real birds? Phoenixes (Phoenices??) are mythical.
Hmmmphh…I’m going to speak up for the perhaps small, yet grouchy, portion of your fan base who are somewhat miffed that y’all don’t think we’re smart enough to handle calling ourselves “Internetainees”. I think Tess’s idea was brilliant in that it ties in so well with what you call yourselves. Internetainers have to have audiences, hence Internetainees. And if it sounds like “detainees”, well, so what? Who hasn’t stood up with a slightly sore posterior after spending wayyyy too much time online after being sucked into the vortex of Youtube. We’re detained by the Internetainment.
BUT. Since you’ve given us these choices, I’m going to place my vote for Mythical Beasts. Randlers is okay, it’s just not me…I’m not a Randler. Maybe because when I hear “Randler” I think “Rambler” and picture the pale aqua Rambler station wagon my dad drove when I was a little kid. Maybe it just sounds like the name “Randall” and I went to school with a paste-eating boy named Randall. Or, maybe I’m just grumpy and you Randlers better get off my yard.
Hey, Tess, you up for designing us a Mythical Beast called the “Internetainee”???
I must confess that I was rather sad when you said “Paul has won the audio competition” but it turned out to be the OTHER Paul
Mythical Beasts gets my vote – partly because I love that song but also for all the reasons you gave in your update, Rhett. =)
I voted for RandLers. I like the sound of it.
I had some thoughts about Mythical Beasts: http://rhettandlink.ning.com/video/rhett-weighs-in-on-mythical
why are you guys on opposite sides in this Kast?
It should be something that’s not obvious but ties back into their vids.
I think Rusty Ray Sr. and Emperor Larnold are the best characters R&L’s ever created. Everybody that I show The Spanner commercial too cries laughing. In honer of RR Barefoot and Emporer Larnold:
RustyRays’s Kids
The CapriSuns
The Radio Islanders
The Misnomers
My favorite: The SpannerKoms
My question is (and I didn’t watch the kast yet) how do you pronounce the first one?
RAND – lers?
R and L ers?
When I first saw it I figured it was R and L ers & I didn’t really like it. Then when I looked at it again I thought maybe it was pronounced the other way.
My favorite was RaLFs, because it made me laugh every time.
)
Just like watching R&L.
Guess I’ll just vote for Mythical Beasts.
I voted but I’m ok with either one. If it comes down to it and the votes are 50/50, you could always do a combination of the two. Mythical Beast: The RandLer.
Thanks for an entertaining show this evening! My roommate and dorm neighbor enjoyed it!
I still prefer Rhinker. I think it’s gender-friendly, t-shirt friendly, easy to say, and self-explanatory. But since that is not an option, I went with Mythical Beasts. Because that is awesome.
I vote for R&Lers since mythical beasts sound like the fans are either extinct or non-existent. Argh so bummed that i missed the live show not 2 hours ago due to work and the fact that I did not know the relaunch was today
Congrats to the winners
I voted Mythical Beasts.
^_^ Nerdfighter symbol! W00T!
Is there something wrong with the zodiac? Also, there’s music fodder there…
CONGRATS to all of the winners – all of the entries were awesome!
I’m so glad the Kast is back. Now I can get back to purposely not planning anything on Thursday nights.
I personally voted for RandLer. It just seems more.. original. RandLer sounds like something powerful and interesting, while when I think of mythical beast, I think of unicorns, dragons, magic, stuff like that. I don’t think of Rhett and Link.
I personally love RandLers, because it’s so clever, easy to remembers, rolls of the tongue, and is funny just like Rhett and Link. But on another note, I loved the Kast and I’m so glad it’s back! I can’t wait till next week, you better be prepared. And a big congratulations to Raquel, Paul (and all the Dufiilhos), Joe, and Lissssssa.
I STILL can’t believe our entry won. We recorded that in like 5 minutes…an hour before deadline! Gaby does have a special gift, though (:
I owe her big time…
I REALLY want to buy a t shirt that says “I am a mythical beast”. RandLer is pretty awesome too, but I want that t shirt. And Mythical beasts could be more individualized. Maybe that’s not good, but there could be teams of Mythical Beasts! I haven’t decided which beast to be yet.
