This ever-changing landscape we call the internet is overwhelming. Every week, we encounter a new site or online service that beckons our registration. So we're constantly engaging in an all-to-familiar double-layered internal debate.
Layer 1: do I have time to sign up for this?...vs...what's the coolness quotient for being an early adopter? And, though time may equal money; isn't coolness priceless?
So on we move to Layer 2: shall I use my same old password (further increasing my chances of online identity theft)...or...shall I invent a new password which I will never write down and immediately forget (this includes adding a "1" to the end of my same old password)?
Enjoy our musical treatment of the subject. We produced this video as the theme song for the Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association's annual conference, FEED. And we'll actually be there in Minneapolis on Oct 1 to perform the song live.

The Internet Overdose Song
Comment below--what sites have you signed up for that you now can't live without? And which ones do you now do without?
This song is totally awesome and I can soooooo relate to it. It is almost exactly how the internet, web 2.0 feels. I loved it so much I shared it with my list of 2500 in facebook. Even my 15 yr old daughter can relate to the meaning of the song. hahaha
I am totally addicted to facebook. I am about to go cold turkey and take a 3 month sebatical so ci can actually have time to build the business that I hoined facebook to get exposure for. hahaha I have gotten so lost in social media.
Keep up the great work.

Keep up the great work.

I guess I forgot to mention the sites I'm hooked up with, let's see...Xanga, MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Blogspot, Twitter, and of course, Rhett&Link!
Mamacitax7 · Sep 11, 2008 1:18pm
Oh one more thing.....a question....I noticed on Link's Twitter box "exporting outtakes from our Road Trip series." Will those be posted for us to watch?? Please?!
nwmomof3 · Sep 11, 2008 12:31pm
This was GREAT!! Every time I watch(and re-watch....and re-watch...) any of your videos, I see something else that makes them so good-entertaining good AND talented videographer/editor good. I appreciate your creativity and attention to detail. Thanks for extremely funny, CLEAN humor!! You should go on the road, and come to WA state to perform!!
nwmomof3 · Sep 11, 2008 12:27pm
You guys get better with every video. Keep it up!
Indiana · Sep 10, 2008 7:24pm
fantastic song...
OK, I'm a lame Late A. Dopter to facebook...Just subscribed a few weeks ago. Someone help me out with the line
"did he tag himself?"
I've been tagging myself in photos. Is that violating a protocol or something?
Bo · Sep 10, 2008 8:20am
Oh man. The songs just keep getting better... I loved the Maine Man song a LOT (the line about bear pee got stuck in my head for at least a week straight...), and I think this one's right up there with it. I love the attitude in this one, and the lyrics are fantastic. I LOVE the last part of the chorus: "the e in flickr was given to me like the key to an internet city of which I am king!" How awesome is that? I love the characters... they're sorta like alternate versions of your real selves, with noticeable differences but similarities as well. Plus the camera work is really top-notch... then again, it always is. I think you guys have a really good sense of using the camera angles and such to contribute to the mood of the song. It makes a huge difference! All around, it's just a really fantastic music video. Loved it.
Anyway, my biggest online addiction besides RhettandLink.com is deviant art. It's not exactly a social networking site, but it does have some of those elements... plus it's a place for me to show off all my artz. Hooray.
Fridgecrisis · Sep 10, 2008 2:05am
Honestly, this one has made me laugh harder than probably any of the other recent ones.
Just because as such a tech geek, I knew what all of these sites were.
And anywho.
Facebook and Youtube are really the only sites I check on a daily basis. I'm signed up in some way to just about everything else, though.
Nicole (RandomNigel) · Sep 9, 2008 9:08pm
You know what Guys? I am forever amazed at your musical talent! You write and perform your own music and your song lyrics are awesome! I am always excited to hear what you'll come up with next and you NEVER disappoint!
Favorite line in this new video?
''The E in flickr was given to me, like the key, to an internet city...of which I am king!''
How GREAT is that?! :)
Mamacitax7 · Sep 9, 2008 8:08pm
Wow! What an awesome song and video! Great job, Rhett and Link!
I'd have to say that I can't live without Facebook. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but I'm addicted! Twitter's pretty addicting, too.
music-lady (Kelli) · Sep 9, 2008 6:27pm
You guys are awesome. thanks for the fun
Dave
David Jennings · Sep 9, 2008 3:53pm
YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. Youre definately my heros. also i wuz wonderin if you guys knew where to get an alka-seltzer shirt cause my friend really wants one.
Oinkslayer · Sep 9, 2008 3:09pm
Oh jeez. Well my main accounts that I keep up with are:
Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and Wordpress [two blogs]. I was ADDICTED to Myspace in middle school but I've seen the light and realize it stinks, but I have it just to keep in contact with people that refuse to use Facebook.
I have other accounts that I signed up for but just used for random things. "Stardoll", [myspace for 10 year olds] that I stopped using a couple years ago, Xanga I got just to use the chat room in David Crowder's blog, but I don't use that at all. I signed up for one or two "Christian" Myspace-esques sites. I think I got a Digg thingy just to digg one of your videos or something like that. I was also a member for a Circleslide [band] message board and had an account on the Smosh website, both of which I don't really use anymore, especially the latter. Beyond that, I can't remember anything.
Raquel TWG · Sep 9, 2008 2:30pm
Every song you come out with I think is my favorite but this one really IS my favorite!
I think the best part were Link's video blogs :-)
I think that I'm off the Twitter train....but I couldn't live without Facebook! It's the only way I can keep up with friends from college.
sunny_gf · Sep 9, 2008 11:32am
So at 0:43 is link using the famous wax paper dogs guitar?
johnrabejr · Sep 9, 2008 8:13am
I have Facebook, Myspace, and you guys forgot Hi5.... but Hi5 is retro, lol every other one I am living without I think? I think this happens to be the best so far out of your songs, and referring to the comment below, I hope this Video DOES get the publicity it deserves, but I also agree that for internet "noobs" they may not understand ^_^
pixieisntemo · Sep 9, 2008 8:04am
Brian Layman: I'm JardinPrayer on Twitter. I have no idea who in the world you are, but I think it's fairly safe to invite you to follow me as long as it's only on Twitter! Will go Facebook the vid now!
JardinPrayer · Sep 8, 2008 10:39pm
Again, I believe this song could be my new favorite!
But, one fear I have: This song is basically an internet theme song, and I think it should get tons of publicity being so. Most people though will have basically no idea what these sites are, with the exception of Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube. I showed it to my mom, who thought it was a catchy tune, but basically had NO IDEA about the song's purpose. I think, without tons of views from very active internet users, like myself, this video won't possibly get the publicity it deserves and you might confuse newcomers to the "Internet".
Maybe I'll be wrong. Maybe I'll be right. Maybe I need something to eat.
I'll go with something to eat xD

I have refused to get a myspace page and will never have one.
It is beneath my dignity as a senior web geek.
I'm way to 1337
brian layman · Sep 8, 2008 6:56pm
This is amazing...I've been waiting for it since Thursday night.
I believe that this could be my new favorite R&L song.
I use, Yahoo, Google, Digg, TUAW, YouTube, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and whatever photoshop/illustrator tutorial page I can find.
You guys are awesome...trying to work out some details on going to see the Locklear film in Oak Ridge. JokesandJesus and I would love to see you guys there.

yeah, its really funny cause my old boss has weekend pics on his Facebook too, haha
danthemontageman · Sep 8, 2008 5:47pm
ok, now that I'm not rushing inbetween classes, I actually read your blog... You're going to be in Minnesota?
That's exciting! I'm from Minnesota myself. The Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) is only about 40 to 60 minutes from where I live. However, I'm sure this FEED thing is something that I can't get into... Even if I could, I have class that day till 4. :-( But I recomend bringing something warm to wear. There shouldn't be any snow on the 1st of October, but it gets chilly. I pre-welcome you to the state of Minnesota and I hope you enjoy it!!
Websites that I've signed up for... Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube.....some random message boards that I don't go to anymore. I'm not big into Myspace anymore either... As far as the one I can't live without, Facebook. I check Facebook frequently.
Anna · Sep 8, 2008 5:39pm
I'm so excited about this song. It's been my favorite of your since I was there while you were recording it.
It's the world I live in!
I've created short url for it if it will work for ppl:
http://bit.ly/InternetOD
People can use that in their tweets and plurks.
And hey on their Facebook wall everyone can post the video using this url:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyPDHh4d1Xo
I'll also send a free 12seconds.com invite to anyone who will make a 12 second cast about watching this vid!
And I'll follow anyone who posts their twitter name here too! I'm at http://www.twitter.com/brianlayman
Let's spread the word ppl!!!
R&L FTW!!!!
Brian Layman · Sep 8, 2008 5:22pm
Thanks guys, for all of the comments! Please continue to share this vid! And Timothy, we appreciate your perspective...but when you make a lot of different music in a lot of genres, you're going to have people like some more than others, right? I'm sure we'll make something you enjoy in the near future...
Rhett · Sep 8, 2008 5:05pm
D'oh! Found your RSS Subscribe button! I'm hooked into you guys six ways from Sunday!
JardinPrayer · Sep 8, 2008 4:58pm
Well, since I discovered you guys about 6 weeks ago, I've befriended both of you on Facebook (though Link has not yet approved me - *sniff*), and begun following you both on twitter. I'm a new Wordpress blogger (I blogged this new video today at jardinprayer.wordpress.com) and I'm currently hunting around this page for the RSS button, which I have not yet found. I'm nuts about Firefox add-ons that let me view source code, download pages as PDFs, and track my eBay, Delicious, and Twitter activity. My Netflix queue means a lot to me because it bleeds over into my real life! YouTube, of course, is a daily visit. My gmail beats the pants off of any other email client on the planet. I abandoned MySpace long ago...definitely an echo in that room.
Love you guys!
JardinPrayer · Sep 8, 2008 4:38pm
Great work putting this together. The video stuff was well done. The music on the other hand . . . I think I don't find your pop culture reference songs as interesting as your Random-Stuff-R&L-Thought-Of material. Cornhole, BBQ, Lord of the Cyborgs (bluetooth), Buffet, Maine Man. I love that stuff. I vote for more of that. I wasn't much into the rock style here either. But that's just taste.
Like I said, the video was very well put together, I'm just putting in a vote in favor of your other strengths. =)
Timothy · Sep 8, 2008 4:29pm
So you are doing "Happy Hour" at FEED. I'll be in Minn. on the 1st---what are you doing early in the day?
BrendaLou · Sep 8, 2008 4:23pm
i relate. it's ridiculous. we got on the RSS band wagon early i guess. now i feel special...
i'll be glad when there's an interface better than my desktop to manage everything i save, read and am into. i still say people should use super gen pass and just have a select few passwords they memorize.
JessieRo · Sep 8, 2008 4:07pm
Awsome!
Jonathan · Sep 8, 2008 4:03pm
Awesome song, and I admit, I'm an Internetaholic. It's true.
Sites I can't live without: Twitter, YouTube, and Google. Luckily, I can have alot of profiles and be able to update them all thanks to Ping.fm. (No, I'm not a sellout for mentioning Ping.fm!)
Ping.fm basically allows you to update all your social networks (Twitter, Pownce, Del.ici.ous, Plurk, Jaiku, Facebook, ect.) all at once. THAT'S why I use it so much. (Ok, I'll stop now!)

I loved the video! lol... It really made me think about how much the internet has consumed my life over the past 10 years or so.... It's weird to think of life before facebook, youtube, etc.
Thanks for an entertaining video! and thanks for the free mp3!
Anna · Sep 8, 2008 3:42pm
Great work guys! LOL. My favorite line... "Did he tag himself?" Hilarious.
My main sites are Yahoo, Facebook, and Google Reader. I also check Drudge Report for my news (fortunately that one doesn't require a password). :)
Thanks for another music video! Keep 'em coming!
