Resolution Time

As the video below indicates, we’ve always been a bit skeptical about New Year’s Resolutions. Instead of setting yourself up for disappointment, it seems that embracing the human tendency towards apathy is a much more realistic approach.

However, since releasing this video last year, we’ve learned a thing or two. I (Rhett) was listening to John Norcross on NPR, and his research indicates that the art of making resolutions is potentially very beneficial, and that a surprising number of people actually do follow through with them. In that spirit, we ask you again this year: What are you resolving to do (or not do) in 2009? Let us know below. Happy New Year!

As tempting as it is to make a resolution to put my shoes on correctly, in 2009 I am going to start my 5 year plan towards owning a home, so that means I have to get a grown up job in my newly decided career path. It’s going to be a scary and exciting year!

I’m resolving to spend more time working ON my life, and not just IN it.

When you make a New Years Resolution, you have to set them up in goals. Most people’s resolutions fail because they don’t do this. When you don’t have a goal it’s going to be harder to accomplish what it is you want and it’s going to be easier to let that resolution go unfinished. For example a very common New Years resolution is that people want to lose weight. If the person can set up a realistic plan on how much weight to lose in one month and how they will accomplish that goal, they will most likely succeed. If they just say, “I want to lose weight” and not plan anything, they will most likely fail. Resolutions can be helpful, it’s just a matter making a plan that will help you stick to it.

Personally, my major resolution is to dedicate more time to the things that I need to. Along with that, if I don’t understand something, I want to be more upfront about it.

I resolve to speak more kindness. To see the bloom on the rose before noticing the thorns. And to cut back on chocolate. I already wear the right shoes correctly. Peace out in 2009

I totally agree with the general futility of new year’s resolution; and Anna I also agree that you have to set your resolutions up as small measurable & obtainable benchmarks (yeah, I’m a special ed teacher, that’s my life). So usually I don’t do much. However, this year I am looking forward to really concentrating on my increasing my organization and decreasing my clutter, specifically in the are of getting my 3-yr-old & myself out the door in a timely manner, all in one piece & only one [or less] of us crying. So that mean’s I actually have to do laundry & then I’d probably better fold it AND put it away. Etc., etc….

I resolve not to open the cooking chamber on my bbq smoker quite so often while in use. I also resolve to make a serious effort to begin working on my MBA.

    Happy New Year guys!

I love this song (my first exposure to Rhett and Link), but i have resolved to do something this year.

Baby steps is usually what is missing in new years resolution so now that my head is no longer in the books, I resolve to take care of me better (whether it is setting time to exercise or meet friends). Also, i want to learn sign language to keep the noggin flowing (I’m in the process of looking for flash cards to buy from work and learning a few each week).
