For our Community Building Exercises in 2008, we wrote 7 “secret” songs, songs which contained a clue that was part of our Quest for the Seven Keys. Many of these songs are very different than our typical stuff, so we’ve decided to make the album available for purchase on the music page for only $3.99. And, while we were at it, we got help from some of our Youtube friends and put together this music video for the Crayon Colors Song:
We want to thank Nicki (aka rhymingpanda)! Back in October, this was her Submit-A-Song Idea concept! (Thanks for reminding us, Nicki
)
Comment below with your favorite crayon color, and your favorite picture from this video.
Don’t forget to check out the other songs from the Secret Songs album on the music page. This is one of the few ways we’re able to make a little dough off our music, so we’d appreciate it if you’d pick up the album if you like our music. Thanks!

I don’t understand what all the negativity was about down there. I thought this was hilarious! I love Rhett and Link
Oh, by the way. STOP PICKING ON RHETT. Geez, when did people gain the right to 1.criticize comedians and 2. never be offended? It’s his stuff, you don’t like it, don’t watch. If you don’t want him to offend you then don’t start by offending him. I feel like i’m scolding one of my little siblings, grow up!
Wow. This is quite a discussion. A couple of things:
1. I was too defensive and I said some things that really came off the wrong way in my original comment. This job is highly emotional, especially when you’ve worked hard on something and you’ve just released it to the world and one of the first comments is “this is a new low”. Without thinking, I responded emotionally. I should have been level-headed and simply said, “What didn’t you like about it?”
2. Everybody has different standards, but because our content is generally G-rated, it throws people a curve ball when there’s some PG content. I’m not personally offended by anything in the video…we wouldn’t have included anything that we thought was over the line. But we understand that some folks might have an issue with it, and it’s their right to let us know how they feel.
3. And specifically about the gross humor… It may have not connected with everyone, but the “gross” humor was very purposefully immature, because we were trying to make fun of guys and capture that middle-schooler in all of us.
Personally, I’m a fan of the color Unmellow Yellow. The pictures that stuck in my head the most after watching this a few times is Katielette’s Elmo and the girls Magic Mint drawing. I will for sure buy the album. I support all that you guys do! I totally see the art behind this video and what you mean by Girls vs Boys. Brilliant stuff!
Now for my rant…..
As an artist, you HAVE to be defensive about your work otherwise no-one will be willing to understand it the way you do. LTV first shared his/her views in a way that would be considered an attack and not constructive. I think everyone here would take offense if someone attacked them on something they worked hard to make. I know I would and I know I have in the past.
Criticism is only good if it’s done in a healthy and constructive way, like LTV did later. Otherwise, it’s just considered an insult because it doesn’t help one improve their form of art. I don’t blame Rhett for acting the way he did. He had every right to do so.
Both LTV and Rhett where mature enough to talk out the situation and I applaud both of them for doing so. People are entitled to their opinions, and that’s OK. But those opinions, good or bad, should be kept constructive.
I can understand how someone would be sensitive to the content of this video….If they don’t want their younger children or siblings to see it, that’s ok. You get to choose what you shelter your children from, but after all, it is a YouTube collaboration of different users that are known for different things.
Personally, I think everyone has to look a little bit deeper into the meaning of the song instead of worrying about what was depicted in the crayon drawings.
I’m sorry to have ranted, but as a different type of artist, I understand where Rhett is coming from. For now, let’s all just appreciate the art of this video and continue to support our favorite web comedians.
First off: I loved the part with hotforwords wearing a hoodie,

(I bet Rhett had a hand in that)
I think it is so interesting how many comment’s you guys got on this video!!!(WoW)
and I personally think that this is one of the best music video that you guys have done, deserves lots of credit
(constructive)Criticism: NoNe this was awesome, I think it’s good that the “Others” can give it but, it’s a collaboration, and when you get some cool people collaborating with you, ya gotta give credit(not criticism) to all of the awesome things that were in the video.
I know I sound like a R&L fanatic(which I am) but, that’s not the point, the point IS: THE VIDEO WAS AWESOME!!!
Thanks for taking the precious(wasted) time out of your busy schedule to read a comment from a 12 year old
God bless,
-Aly
I just purchased the secret songs and just wanted to let you guys know that I very much enjoy them! Especially “Forgot Your Name” and “Your Mama Was Right.” Great music that is well worth the $3.99!
I liked the song idea, just didn’t like the collab as, personally, I was slightly embarrassed that I told EVERYONE I knew to come to this site over the weekend and this is the first video they’ll most likely see. And, no, I wouldn’t show it to my kids either which i’ve taken for granted that I can do without any screening.
i personly like it i mean i like some of the other videos u guys have done in the past way better but this vid isint bad i thought it was funny! and liked all the creative colors you guys thought of and the pics were pretty funny at the end!!!! i espeshily liked the very end when it shows this random guy and his just talking about these cayons! lol that was pretty hesterical!!!!! so r u guys going to make a music video for evey secret song????? if tha answer is yes then cant wait for the others to come!!!! and seriously i cant wait i go to your guyses web site ever 3 hours or so and ya i know i lov you guys that much and i would seriously faint if i saw you guys in real life or mabye just forget who i am! lol im 14 and 9 10th by tha way,lol that would be weird if i said that and i was like 30 or 40 lol just to let you know so you dont think im a crazed 30 year old lol
p.s. you guys would make way more money if you relesed your music videos on itunes to buy i mean i would totally buy every one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
god bless!!!!!!
All I can say is that you guys are so lucky you have a character limit on your comments! Anyone who reads Nalts’ blog knows I have a tendency to write novels in the comment section, and your comment limiter saved you from such a grizzly fate.
Let’s see if I can sum up my message in a few sweet sentences, k?
-Surprised at the criticism.
-Amazed by the collab – I’m trying to do one and it’s a pain in the bum.
-Blah blah blah.
-Filler blather
-I wrote a sentence starting with the word “parenthetically”.
-Obscure reference to Ned Ryerson from the film “Groundhog day”
-I don’t know, but it’s entirely possible, that I, being the guy that I am, overused several commas, several times.
And since “a few” generally means three and I gave you seven, I have once again failed miserably. Now, please excuse me while i go try to drown my sorrows with a few hours of restless sleep.
I thought it was quirky and just fun to watch and listen to. I don’t understand why some people take things like this so seriously. I personally loved it and found myself laughing through alot of the colors. Haha.
Makes me wish I were capable of buying their album from here. :’(
Oh…and thanks for the shout-out guys!
You have no idea how much that made my day.
OK LovED this one!! XD
good ending
so ..fun! bow bow boww bow~
also likes the brit at the end
love all the diffrent color names.. except the puss.. that just…
Anyways This is so going on my ipod!!
Wow guys. Like I said on the YouTube page, quite possibly one of your funniest songs ever. And I LOVE the new album! It’s actually better than most of your other stuff, and being all serious for a few songs (“Leprechaun Named Steve”) actually paid off. Keep doing stuff like that please!
Best part of the song? Um… the guy with the “Blood-Red” Picture. He was creepy and funny at the same time.
That song was very fun! My favorite color was Giving Tree because I remember that book from elementary school and the picture she drew was really cute!
I really loved all the boys colors, and they confirm my earlier theory that boys are gross if you leave them to their own devices. Great work guys!
hello, i thought the song was great!! loved the pictures. gracious everyone got quite serious over everything though! good work guys, and yes i showed this to my middle-schooled brother and he liked it, A LOT. haha nice job.
Okay I lied. Not the last comment.
Hehe. But this is one is totally random!
I just have to give you props on the Hoover Dam song. Seriously, it’s amazing. I want to buy it…but I’m poor :[
You should do trivia during a show where I happen to be watching and then give away just that song ;]
It’s soooo good. I love how you guys write songs that are not only funny but they’re also just good music.
Okay, I just read the majority of the 65 comments that have been left here voicing opinions over the Crayon Song video and whether or not there anyone was offened by or defensive over it.
I guess I echo everyone who said Rhett had a right to feel defensive over his work. I personally have no problem with how Rhett replied in that as the comments went on it all seemed to work its self out amicablly. I think that Rhett & Link can see from the comments left here that their friends & fans are more than ready to jump in on their behalf and do the defending for them.
I want the guys to know that there was no offense taken by me over this song/video or by Rhett’s reaction to the criticism. I know that both Rhett & Link are conscientious about their work and as the Mom of 7 kids (4 under the age of 18 yrs) I have never felt that I had to monitor Rhett&Link’s material for my kids viewing. I mentioned on the YouTube page that I loved this song/video and that is still my opinion.
My husband giggled over the gruesomeness like a little boy. I think “soiled hospital gown” was his favorite.
The “TWK was here” reference just added that sort of inside jab joke that no one would ever take personally were it them (heck, if he ref’d me like that, I’d blush at being iconic)…
I actually like how the colors really reflect how the users come across to most… Kristina (from 5ag) got cute bear hugs and electric limes while C… eh, littlepandaexpress … made a great picture… a llama, huzzah! … then you take the boys, especially already-snarky and sarcastic Brent (cmon, he talks about psychedelic shrooms and lawn gnomes in his recent video–that is not only awesome IMHO but indicative of what’s to come) and give them colors like urine yellow… it’s going to bring out the 8 year old in them, and for that, I think it’s adorable… when I was a kid, I was exposed to way worse stuff than this by my peers… and that… is being said by another down home, North Carolina kid who grew up in Asheboro with churches almost as frequently passed as houses.
I think a lot of people’s “moral stance” has become hugely reactive… more people getting more restrictive in their “what is okay to show a child” ideas, which is okay as long as it doesn’t get extreme. I think it’s a reaction to more crap being out there… and I think it says nothing about this particular video… this would be allowed 20 years ago, and it’s still quite fine. The fact that Brent drew those pictures after growing up in Denton with an awesome loving family is just proof that it’s in our natures to have a little bit of gross curiosity about us. As a girl, it doesn’t make me go “eww” in the least little bit… just chuckle, that’s all. Inside jokes like “TWK was here” make it a true sign that this IS a COMMUNITY. Thank you for building the community with the “aww” cuteness of Nadine and Olga, etc. and the dorky cuteness of Brent and Charlie!
Guys,
Keep up the good work. Maybe you should make a video about avatars next. You can give the credit to me!!!
Seriously, my fiancee and I both love your work. We are devout viewers.
- Being an art student, (Broadcast Design) I personally think that Rhett was right to be defensive, but I think it was kinda too much. It IS really sad when you work on something for a long time and see a mean negative comment, without any creative criticism. Believe me, I know. (Supernote Jingle Bells)
- I don’t believe that this video was offensive at all, but maybe that’s because I’m a soph in college, but that’s besides the point. This video is pretty much the the “edgiest” video that they have made, and frankly, its not really that crude.
- Id also like to say that I love the song. Its REALLY catchy, and it was really catchy when they were recording it while I was there.
- Also, Im the 70th comment.
Awww…I hate that this vid sparked controversy. I think it was a good performance. It was awkward to see R&L sing certain colors chosen by others, but believe the video would have suffered greatly had they not. R & L make music well and I probably would’ve stopped watching had it been less engaging.
In response to the Long time viewer…
I do agree that this vid wasn’t for all audiences, but thought it was fun and no more offensive than it would be to meet people with that sort of humor. Also, it’s never been R & L’s responsibility to censor internet content for families. Let’s not get all bratty and spoiled just because they’re most often considerate in this way. In R & L’s line of work, networking is key. It can’t be easy to be Christians operating under the public eye…and it must also be difficult to be sensitive (and tactful) to more than one type of audience.
In Summary
-Variety is good (but)
-No one can be all things to all people.
-It’s good to be clear about vision and realistic expectations and gentle when giving criticism.
Boy! That was a mouthful! I guess I got worked up there for a minute.
By far the most comments on a blog that I have seen in FOREVER…It’s turning into a chatroom. If only we had a Rhett and Link Chatroom……….
I propose you (yes I mean all you who haven’t posted on this video) post a comment! We could make it into the triple digets (maybe). Anyway, I quite enjoy this video. When I was a young lass I would only use the crayons that I liked the names of. Like ‘forest green’, I loved trees and forest green just seemed so romantic… I’m not going to lie, the nasty names at the end of this vid made me cringe, and gag, but I imagine that was the point
Ha. For some reason, the only color that really made my skin crawl was flesh.
…odd.
Very cool video. I loved the Magic Mint drawing, and my favorite color was probably Mango Tango.
I agree with some of the comments below that this is not your usual type of video, but that’s actually why I like it so much.
Yay….I just downloaded the album! I love it guys keep up the good work! x
Alright people, COME ON. Not sure if this conversation is still going on, but if it is Im ending it NOW. I hope.
How is juvenile humor offensive? Sure theres a doodle of someone in a bikini, but still guys…
This isn’t offensive, it’s a low standard for humor. In a small, SMALL bit of the song near the end.
I’d show it to my kids. If I had them.

I like it!! Very creative!!
Okay, I watched the vomit show. And then watched the Crayon video. I’m not keen on either subject. I do like the creativity of Rhett and Link, and that’s why I keep coming back. I didn’t care for the hands in the toilet part of Surrogate Sharers, by the way. But overall, you guys are gifted, funny, and wholesome. I figure the gross stuff comes from the Peter Panism that you both share and boys get into that awkward poopgrossbodyparts humor now and then. Some ideas are hits and some are misses.
Rhett, you did the right thing and apologized for your defensive comments. And the other commenters are right as well–we should be able to leave comments without comebacks. Cheerio, Cricket
Just wanted to get this blog to 80 comments. And I think Rhett explained himself very well on the Live show. I hope “LongTimeViewer” watched the show.
iv asked this before but ru guys going to make more music videos for the secret songs???
and im the 81th commenter!!! lol
Hmm, my color would to be blue, and I think my favorite picture was the mango tango. As for the song I thought It was very creative although I don’t care for the gross colors or pictures, especially the urine yellow, it would have been perhaps more tasteful to do a dog with fire hydrant. I did like links expression whenever ‘flesh’ came on, however. Can’t wait to see when Monday rolls around!
I liked this song a lot. One of my favorites.
I don’t understand what you guys are saying at the end of it though. Are we supposed to?
The whole premise of getting everyone to draw a picture for you guys to make this video is cool. I really did like this one.
I’ve discovered R and L in the past month and a half and you guys are brilliant. I didn’t know about a Christian connection with your work. That reflects your success in having such wide appeal. It seemed that some people missed the point about the grossness of boys, in contrast with girls. And real creativity requires risk-taking. In that light, my inner 10 year old loved it. Also, I’ve never seen such polite discord and discussion at a website before. Kudos to everyone.
This is a instant clasic.
YOU GUYS have a real talent combined with creative ideas from your friends WOW.
If I were qualified to give advice I might say “Keep us smileing” and forget the (sour lemon green) in others.
very random and good. i dont know wich one i like… their all very good
i know this is a bit late but i just wanted to say that i understand what you are getting at. I personally love this video/song and the collaborative theme and think you should do more just like this. I’ve only watched this video 3 times and have already learned all of the words! it reminds me a bit of the LOST – ANSWERS song/video that you and Link made with the fine bros (I am also learning the words to this! just stuck on the verse about Jin) I havn’t found one of your videos that i dont like and i dont think i will!
keep making amazing videos and have fun with it, make what YOU want!

i am not sure why someone would say this video is bad, i want to say my part, first off you guys are amazing and one of the few people i would consider IDOLS <– caps because your that amazing! and whoever tries to bash you deserves the impending virus they recieve, thanks for the great videos i enjoyed them Keep up the good work! (especially like the drive thru tacobell song, you got served)
