We can’t tell you how many times we’ve had the “BBQ conversation”. In NC, there’s a 50% chance it’ll happen at any gathering. One guy starts talking about his BBQ preference, then the conversation turns towards a comprehensive rundown of every type of BBQ across the South.
We’ve talked about it so much that we knew that we had to incorporate the concept into a song, and what better fit than in the midst of a series of videos about food? Enjoy:
Thanks especially to the Homestead Pickers for backing us up. We literally played the song for them TWICE, then this was the second take. So, this was the fourth time these guys ever heard the song.
Thanks also to everyone who provided pictures for the song. We couldn’t have done it without you. And to the people at Roadfood.com, thanks for the picture of mutton.
Thanks to Dave over at Firey Foods and
Shaun at Southern Barbecue for featuring the song!
We acknowledge that this song is not an exhaustive account of Southern BBQ, but it covers the basics. If you feel that your state was misrepresented, let us know below. Also, there are a few hidden messages in there for those of you who watch a bit more carefully. Let us know what you find!

You haven’t had Barbecue till you eat it at Whispering Pines in Albemarle, North Carolina. Every other barbecue is only pretending to be barbecue!!!!!!!
It is ALL GOOD! But especially cball’s and buddemeyer’s.
What a great country with so many choices!
The best BBQ in the country is by far in Shelby, NC. Alston Bridges BBQ or Red Bridges BBQ, the sauce and the red slaw make them the best!! You will want to slap your momma!!
We have lived in N.C. and Tenn..No comparsion to the BBQ in N.C. The best in the land!!
FOR REAL BBQ JUST COME TO LEXINGTON,N.C. THE BBQ CAPITOL OF THE WORLD. THE MUSIC IS OUT OF SIGHT!
The best BBQ is Eastern NC! Here’s why. It is not just cooked pork without any smokey flavor, as you often find in Western NC, Alabama, or Georgia. It also has spices incorporated in the meat, such as vinegar, red peper, salt, pepper, delicately imparting flavorful busts of joy., especially at Smithfield BBQ restaurants, which is a local NC chain throughout the eastern part of the state.
And that’s all that I have to say about that.
Okay now did you know the very last Confederate soliders to surrender were from FLORIDA. I was raised in Miami (admittedly not the south) where ribs are BBQ. I have still not been able to convince my South Carolina born and bred husband that Florida is southern, just talk to a North Florida native, they may make you a believer.
Agreed- Lexington NC BBQ is the best- ever. End of conversation.
Yep…..true Rednecks…..mixing California & Florida up !
By the way, we do have good Bar-B-Q in California (some of our kin came from the south).
Great song guys !
Nice song! Hands down, Lexington style (NC) is by far the best. I like Speedy’s and the Monk.
This Yankee knows BBQ and I love it all. Even have a Brinkmann smoker out back. I’m pretty good at smoking Brisket and learned a few tips in Memphis. Whenever I stoke up the smoker, my hand automatically curls up and I’m forced to put a beer in it. Strange how that happens.
Song is awesome.
Oh, yeah, notice a guy walking behind the band early in the video, mayonnaise is misspelled and the obvious one is you have California shown when talking about Florida. I’ll have to watch again for more.
Alston Bridges BBQ rocks in Shelby, NC but I’m from J’ville, NC so I’ll always be an Downeast BBQ girl. Nothing beats Eastern NC BBQ! Kings, JC’s, Thig’s, Smithfield… it’s all great!!
you guys are SOOO right!!! Wilson, nc has THE best!!!
Now your BBQ down south might be nice………. but wait until you taste one of our BBQ treats in Alexandria, Minnesota! Come on up and set a spell!
QUESTION for you guys around DURHAM, NC …
There used to be a “BARN” west of Durham, just off I-85 that had the best BRUNSWICK STEW and BBQ … is it still there ?
Ole’ G’boro Boy …
I grew up on BBQ prepared by Burrell Hopkins in Asheboro, NC. His Hop’s BBQ is the second best I have eaten – I haven’t eaten the best yet>
Love the song! Your right NC does have the best BBQ! I live in florida now and they don’t have a clue how to make BBQ here! My favorite restaurants are Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, NC. Hannah’s BBQ in Claremont,NC. If you find yourself in Memphis, TN the best is McNeely’s BBQ. Much better than the dry rub at the rendevous.
i am from florida mutherfucker we are the south asshole. teh best fucking bbq around
Hi Rhett! Hi Link!
Your BBQ song rules! We loved it and wrote an article about your video on our barbecue magazine!
Many many greetings from the 1st italian barbecue fans community and happy barbecue to all BBQ lovers!
carne al fuoco – il piacere del barbecue
Damn straight that KC Masterpiece ain’t nothing for BBQ – that’s just nationally-marketed, mass-produced crap…the lowest common denominator for the whole country…
That said (and I’ll say this!) NC BBQ hasn’t got ANYTHING on good ol Kansas City BBQ. Skip your vinegary crap and pour on that sweet, sweet KC BBQ lovin’. Try Fiorella’s Jack Stack if you can get it where you live…
Heartland BBQ, baby!
I just have to say, you all ain’t had nothin’ till you’ve had some KY Mutton BBQ!! MMMMM-MMMMMM Thats Good.
Love the song!!!
Just LOVE the song!!!!!!!
I am a huge fan of East Carolina BBQ sauce – Vinegar Base is the only way to go ! Can’t imagine white sauce on pulled pork !
You do realize that you have the state of California graphic with the Florida segment, right? Love the song, though!
B’s in Greenville,NC the best hands down, the pit master still drops sweat into the pork while it’s cooking……bums in Aden for the best collards you’ll ever put a fork in!!!!!!and i’ve gotta say Parkers brunswick stew….good good good
Best BBQ is found at Joe’s BBQ in Whiteville, NC. Unless it’s prepared on a pig cooker in the backyard by a good ol’ boy from
Tabor City (Razor City) NC.
You kinda forgot Virginia. Once you get out of the DC area, Virginia is most assuredly the South. Think bluegrass music from the Blue Ridge; Richmond as the capital of the confederacy, etc.
Our BBQ is much like eastern North Carolina’s, but with a little tomato. Great song.
This is terrific!! Great job, guys. And you’re right, we Yankees use barbecue as a verb. Go figure. And sometimes we make “BBQ” out of ground beef and serve it on a bun. There’s ketchup involved. Horrible, I know. Personally I prefer the vinegar based barbecue but it’s all good!
Kansas City Barbecue? Puhleeeese. My wife grew up in KC and when she got her first taste of Alston Bridges BBQ in Shelby, she finally knew what real BBQ was. Not smothered and cooked to death with sickeningly sweet sludge. KC Masterpiece? More like KC Masterbate.
