Interesting info. I have to go to traffic court here in Stanly County at the end of March for supposedly following too closely. The stupid part is I was at least 8 feet away from the guy in front of me and we were in a 35mph zone with perfectly clear weather conditions, so I’m working with my dad to try to figure out if they can reduce it so I have no points on my license or if I should just have a lawyer figure it out for me. I’ve only had to go to traffic court one other time and that was for driving past curfew when I had a restricted license, even though I was past the age of the restriction, so they told me to get it fixed, go to court, and they would drop it, which they did. NC traffic court is a joke.
Sorry to hear your experience at traffic court was so intimidating, Link. I live in Houston, TX and this summer my husband got a speeding ticket in a work zone on a highway near Farmington, MN (we were heading to WA for a nephew’s wedding). The officer said Mr.C was going 58 in the posted 45 mph work zone. After doing research online and much thought we decided fighting the ticket in court was the only way to go, of course that meant making the 4 day round trip back to Farmington, NM. We calculated that making the trip and losing in court anyway would be less costly than just paying the fine and dealing with the increase in our car insurance over 4 yrs. The officer probably thought he had an easy ticket when he saw we were an older couple from out of state, I mean, how likely would it be that these old Texans would drive all the way back to NM just to fight a ticket in court? Well…we asked for a court date, Mr.C got all of his research ready, he practiced his defense and we headed back to NM. When we got to the courthouse the clerk looked surprised to see us. She had us wait in a dark cortroom while she scrambled on the phone to find the judge and the other court officers to come in and hear our case. Clearly they had not expected us to show up. After 20 mins and a couple of unsuccessful calls to find the officer who issued the ticket to appear in court our case was dismissed! I can’t say if you did the right thing or not, Link, but I will say that you should NEVER let yourself be intimidated by the court system because you CAN fight city hall and WIN!
Seriously, your PO Box is a row over from mine? Wacky. Although, I don’t live in Lillington. I actually live right by where those deputies were forced to shoot that 13 y/o kid a week or so ago.
I’ve never had to go to traffic court, so I’m not sure if you did the right thing or not. I am thinking, “Prayer for judgment? Uh………” But everyone else says you did the right thing, and that might be because you said to leave a comment that said you did. So… I’m just gonna say you did the right thing. Good job!
Link, you did the right thing. I found a forum discussing another person who also got cited for 34 in a 25 school zone. Even with the reduced sentence “Speeding in a School Zone is 3 points… in some cases adding 200.00-400.00 evey six months to insurance costs.”
(From this site: http://www.city-data.com/forum/raleigh-durham-chapel-hill-cary/517352-speeding-ticket-school-zone.html )
Also, I found this on WikiAnswers in case you were wonder about the Probabtion period: “In NC for automobile insurance purposes, one can have up to one PJC per household every three years that will not cause insurance premium increases. For driver’s license purposes, a driver can have up to two PJCs within a five year period which will not result in driver’s license points nor have any effect on the driving record of the person receiving the PJC.”

Hope it helps.
My Husbands first cousin is the District Attorney in Las Vegas, and he does more than traffic tickets. He handled a very *um* high-profile *um* case not to long ago. Lets just say he *squeezed* the juice.
Glad to see your frisbee made it to Lillington safe and sound.
Link, I’m 95-96% positive you did the right thing.
You did the right thing, Link. You did the right thing.
Thanks Paul. Yeah, I googled it and found the whole PJC thing. And ultimately my think was in line with yours. Ever thought about being a traffic lawyer?
For me, it comes down to the insurance. It’s much better for you to have “no” ticket, than a lesser ticket, because who wants to pay for that ticket monthly until it’s off your record? Totally worth paying the court once and being done with it; because even you get another ticket, it’s no different than if you hadn’t gotten the prayer for judgement…they’ll just be on your record together.
Of course, for me, this financial side negates the lawyer… while it is utterly confusing in there, I’d probably be paying more to a lawyer than I really need to. My advice: google your “offense” and see what worked, and didn’t, for others who have gone before you.
And did you have the handlebars before the judge? Because maybe you intimidated everyone there.
So a little question. Who the heck is chasing, trying and putting all the murders and really bad people away? Seems like a lot of money spent over a traffic fine. But you did the right thing Link!
Link, you SO did the right thing.
If you would have done this any other way,
you would have been put in a small room with no ventilation,
and rats, yeah- probably some hungry rats… and some big
Alsatian woman wearing real fur (ugh) would have wrapped
your head in bubble wrap – and left you in the dark, if you wanted to get out -
you would have been forced to hum the theme from
Jeopardy for three days straight…
I know all this from experience. School zone violations are nasty.
You SOOOO did the RIGHT thang!
Link, you did the right thing! And the mustache – wow! looking goood
Hmmm… what was yesterday a full beard is today a Fu Manchu-style mustache (or is that referred to as a handle bar??… I never got those straight). Way to mix it up, Link!
ooooh I want to send something! what’s the address again? or where can I find it..?
LOL…Link, you did the right thing! However, I don’t think you need to pay a lawyer for traffic court. In fact, if you find a lawyer willing to go to traffic court with you for this kind of citation, you probably don’t want that guy representing you!
Link, you did the right thing!
Put your phone (iphone?) into “airplane” mode before you record. It won’t get interrupted by anything. I’ve had this same issue when recording audio as well…
thanks King!
Thanks emily! Yeah, I’ll go that route next time too. Once you get a ticket, you get inundated with solicitations from traffic lawyers in the mail anyways.
You did the right thing Link! And in case you haven’t clarified already, its 3 years
I had to go to the Raleigh courthouse last May, and you’re right…how are you supposed to know what to do?? I felt like I just went up to random people and waited for them to ask me something, to which I answered but didn’t know the consequences of what I was saying. Would it be so difficult to put some basic instructions on their website? Even just…you know…where to go once inside that big, scary building! Or even better, what some of the options are when you get a ticket. I felt totally lost. Luckily, somehow, everything got erased for me. Don’t ask me how. That was for an accident I was in, though. THIS FRIDAY, however, I have a court date in Stanly county for a speeding ticket. And this time, you guessed it, I got a lawyer to go down for me. Totally worth it, even if just to relieve the stress.
Congrats on surviving it…I think you did the right thing.
